Overview
BLS® 9128 is a benzotriazole UV absorber developed for use in solvent-borne coating systems and in powder coatings. It also represents a more environmentally friendly alternative to BLS® 1328 (UV-328) in ambient and low temperature curing coating systems.
Chemistry
Chemical Name: Phenol, 2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-6-(1-methyl-1-phenylethyl)-4- (1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)-
CAS Number: 73936-91-1
Chemical Structure
Typical Properties
Product Form: Solid
Melting Range: 108 – 110oC
Molecular Weight: 441.6 g/mol
Applications
BLS® 9128 provides excellent protection against ultraviolet degradation in solvent-borne (automotive and coil coatings) and powder coating systems. Combinations of BLS® 9128 with hindered amine light stabilizers often provide enhanced performance, providing maximum long-term protection against blistering, color change, cracking, gloss reduction, and delamination.
Advantages
- Extends coatings lifetimes by minimizing defects such as loss of gloss and cracking
- Strong absorption of UV radiation in the 300-400 nm region
- Good solubility in coating solvents
- Superior thermal permanence for high temperature curing
- Synergistic performance with hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS)
- Not a REACH Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC)
Guidelines for Use
Suggested use levels for BLS® 9128 in solvent-borne coatings range from 1 to 3% in combination with BLS® 292 or BLS® 123 at from 0.5 to 2% (concentrations based on total solids). For powder coatings, suggested use levels range from 1 to 3% in combination with BLS® 1144, BLS® 1111, or BLS® 119 at from 0.5 to 2%. The exact formulation to be used is dependent on the substrate, performance requirements, and other factors, and should be determined by the user based on testing to simulate actual conditions of use. Please contact your Mayzo representative for specific recommendations for your application.
