Applications

BLS® 1144 is a highly effective light stabilizer in powder coating applications, including PES and epoxy/PES systems. The use in combination with UV absorbers such as BLS® 9218 or BLS® 234 is recommended to provide optimum light stability.
BLS® 1144 is also suitable for use in polyurethanes, styrenic block copolymers, unsaturated polyesters, acrylics, adhesives, sealants, and elastomers.

Advantages

  • Extends the lifetime of coatings by minimizing defects such as loss of gloss and cracking
  • Also functions as an antioxidant to provide protection against thermal degradation
  • Enhances the triboelectric effect in powder coatings for improved transfer efficiency
  • Reduces color development in powder coatings from high temperature curing or over-baking
  • Synergistic performance with other light stabilizers

Guidelines for Use

The suggested use levels in powder coatings range from 0.5 to 2%, in combination with BLS® 9128 or BLS® 234 at from 1 to 3%. If necessary, the addition of secondary antioxidants such as BENEFOS® 1626 or BENEFOS® 1680 can help to further reduce discoloration caused by high temperature curing or over-baking.
In plastics and other substrates, suggested use levels range from 0.1 to 1.0%. Combinations of BLS® 1144 with other light stabilizers (UV absorbers and/or benzoates) often provide synergistic performance. Because BLS® 1144 also functions as an antioxidant, other primary antioxidants in the formulation can often be reduced in concentration or eliminated.
The exact formulation to be used is dependent on the substrate, performance requirements, and other factors, and should be determined by the user based on testing to simulate actual conditions of use. Please contact your Mayzo representative for specific recommendations for your application.
