Overview
BLS® 1312 is a high performance oxalanilide UV absorber that is ideal for the light stabilization of plastics, adhesives, coatings, and other substrates.
Chemistry
Chemical Name: Ethanediamide, N-(2-ethoxyphenyl)-N’-(2-ethylphenyl)-
CAS Number: 23949-66-8
Chemical Structure
Typical Properties
Product Form: Solid
Melting Range: 124 – 128oC
Molecular Weight: 312.4 g/mol
Applications
BLS® 1312 provides excellent performance in the light stabilization of a variety of polymers, including polyamides, polyesters, PVC, polyurethanes, styrenic polymers, acrylics, and polyolefins. The product is also useful for the light stabilization of adhesives, powder coatings, and solvent-based coatings. Because of its inherently non-discoloring nature, BLS® 1312 is ideal for use in transparent or light-colored substrates. It is also non-interacting with reactive monomers (e.g. isocyanates) and metal-based stabilizers (e.g. copper-based stabilizers for polyamides, PVC thermal stabilizers). BLS® 1312 is also suitable for use in combination with optical brighteners and photoinitiators. It can also be considered as an alternative to benzotriazole UV absorbers in applications where replacement is desired for regulatory compliance reasons.
Advantages
- Strong UV absorbance, especially in the UV-B region
- Synergistic performance with other light stabilizers (HALS, benzoates)
- Very low color contribution
- Non-interacting with metal ions, bases
- Excellent compatibility with polar polymers, including polyamides, polyesters, PVC, PUR
- Suitable for use with optical brighteners due to its low absorbance of long wavelength UV
- Improved regulatory acceptance as compared to benzotriazole UV absorbers
Guidelines for Use
Suggested use levels in plastics and, adhesives range from 0.05% to 0.5% by weight, and in coatings from 1% to 2% by weight based on total solids. Combinations of BLS® 1312 with other light stabilizers such as HALS and benzoates often show synergistic performance. The exact formulation to be used is dependent on the substrate, performance requirements, and other factors, and should be determined by the user based on testing to simulate actual conditions of use. Please contact your Mayzo representative for specific recommendations for your application.
