Applications
BLS® 1577 is extensively used in the manufacturing of high-performance plastics, including polyalkene terephthalates, naphthalates, linear and branched polycarbonates, and modified polyphenylene ether compounds. Its applications are broad, covering polymer blends and alloys such as PC/ABS, PC/PBT, PPE/IPS, and PPE/PA, as well as copolymers. BLS® 1577 is particularly beneficial in reinforced, filled, and/or flame-retarded compounds, which may be transparent, translucent, or pigmented. Due to its minimal tendency to chelate, it is also suitable for formulations in polymers containing catalyst residues, making it an indispensable component in the production of complex moldings, fibers, sheets, thin films, and co-injected or co-extruded semi-finished parts.
Advantages
- Protects plastics and other substrates from the damaging effects of UV radiation
- Strong absorption of UV radiation in the 280-350 nm region
- Outstanding photostability
- Synergistic performance with other light stabilizers (HALS, benzoates)
- Low color contribution, low volatility
- FDA cleared in polycarbonate, PET, polyester
- Improved regulatory acceptance as compared to benzotriazole UV absorbers
Guidelines for Use
Suggested use levels in plastics, adhesives, and candles range from 0.2% to 1.0%, and in coatings from 1% to 3% based on total solids. Combinations of BLS® 1577 with other light stabilizers such as HALS and benzoates often show synergistic performance. The exact formulation to be used is dependent on the substrate, performance requirements, and other factors, and should be determined by the user based on testing to simulate actual conditions of use.
