Applications

BLS® 550 provides excellent performance as a light stabilizer system in coatings and plastics. It demonstrates remarkable solubility in solvents and compatibility with a variety of resins. BLS® 550 provides outstanding light stability to epoxy and polyurethane (PUR) systems and exhibits strong UV absorbance at wavelengths critical to UV degradation for these polymers. Moreover, BLS® 550 demonstrates reduced discoloration compared to conventional UV absorbers and blends. Its miscibility with diglycidyl ethers, as well as polyether- and polyester-based polyols, facilitates easy stabilizer dosing during formulation. Additionally, BLS® 550 shows synergistic effects with antioxidants like BNX 1135 and BNX 245, enhancing overall stability and performance in coatings applications.

Advantages

  • Excellent light stability in coatings and plastics, particularly for epoxy and polyurethane systems.
  • Extraordinary solubility and compatibility with various resins for easy formulation.
  • Reduced discoloration compared to conventional UV absorbers and blends.
  • Synergistic effects with antioxidants like BNX 1135 and BNX 245 enhance overall stability and performance.

Guidelines for Use

Suggested use levels in coatings range from 0.5 to 5% based on total solids, depending on the film thickness, substrate, and performance requirements. As very general guidelines, concentrations of 2.5–5% by weight are suggested for coatings of 10–20 microns dry thickness, 1.25–2.5% by weight for coatings of 20–40 microns dry thickness, and 0.5–1.25% by weight for coatings of 40–80 microns dry thickness. The exact formulation should be determined by the user based on testing to simulate actual conditions of use. Please contact your Mayzo representative for specific recommendations for your application.
